Wow! When I first saw this amazing TomTato plant I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. How is it possible to have both a tomato and a potato in one plant? I thought this must have been a joke or some sort of ridiculously genetically modified plant. However the BBC report says that it is not a GMO at all! The plant was created by a technique called grafting.
“Grafting is a horticultural technique whereby tissues from one plant are inserted into those of another so that the two sets of vascular tissues may join together.” – Source wikipedia
This is SUCH a neat concept. Apparently by the time you harvest the tomatoes, the potatoes will be ready to be dug up. It looks like a concept with a lot of potential, and has come a long way over the past several years. This particular example listed above is from the UK, but New Zealand also released their own version recently.
