Grapefruit and Drugs Interactions – A Dangerous Combination
Grapefruits are a food that is considered very healthy and good for you. There are a few things to consider when you take medicines, since there are some grapefruit and drugs interactions that can be deadly.
I like eating foods that contribute to a healthy life. Before today, I’d never heard anyone say anything negative about grapefruits…well, other than maybe that they’re a little tangy. But dangerous? I’d never heard that. Good thing I started doing my own research!
Benefits of Grapefruit
Grapefruits are supposed to be good for you, right?
They’ve got lots of vitamin c to help support your immune system.
They’re one of the highest ranked fruits in antioxidant activity.
They lower cholesterol with the pectin they contain.
They help reduce the risk of kidney stones.
They lower insulin levels, thus helping prevent weight gain.
They can help protect you from lung cancer and colon cancer.
Grapefruit and Drugs Interactions
It’s coming to light that grapefruits don’t necessarily interact well with all drugs. A New York Times article (2012) was published that drew my attention to this problem.
It started by saying “The patient didn’t overdose on medication. She overdosed on grapefruit juice.” – that got me thinking – hold on a second, HOW could she overdose on grapefruit juice
How is that even possible? In reading the article I discovered that the reason she had a problem was that she drank grapefruit juice in combination with the medicine she was taking.
There’s a new list out that lists 85 different adverse effects from mixing grapefruit juice with specific drugs. You can find the complete list here, and you should definitely check it out!!! If you take any medication, it’s always good to know just how it’s going to interact with the rest of your life.
This list will hopefully help you understand a little more about medications that have negative reactions with grapefruit.
Lots of (but not all) medications have labels on them that inform the patient not to mix it with grapefruit. Also, many hospitals no longer carry grapefruit juice, for this reason.
If you check out the list and talk to your doctor, you can avoid a bad reaction by being informed! I’m not a doctor, or an expert, but I just wanted to pass along this information!
If you have any questions, please ask your doctor. Your health and well being are so important that it’s worth the time to ask!
Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t hate grapefruits! In fact, I love them. They have lots of amazing health benefits, you just have to be careful about mixing them with certain medications!
I hope this article has helped you be a little more informed about grapefruit, and inspired you to check to make sure grapefruits are compatible with your life!
